The well-known macaroni and cheese, mac and cheese to the rest of the world, has had a lot of versions – Gruyere cheese gives perfection to its taste.. It has become a go-to dish in most American homes and which can be likened to burgers and hotdogs. A lot of versions can be found on this dish, some with different kinds of cheese as sauce like the Swiss cheese Gruyere Cheese. 

 Brief History on Mac and Cheese

 In the 14th Century, the Makerouns, a cheese and pasta casserole was found in an English cookbook. Around 18th Century, mac and cheese has been well-loved in Europe but was particularly served as an upperclass dish. When England colonized North America, they also brought this cheesy treat with them and the rest is history. Americans learned to love the dish their colonizers brought which reached thousands of households especially when Kraft introduced it in a package and called it Kraft Dinner. It was even made more famous during the World War II where a shortage of fresh milk and dairy was experienced. Kraft’s mac and cheese became such a hit and was the solution for most of the hungry stomachs during that time.

Different Mac and Cheese Versions

The original mac and cheese is consisting of cooked macaroni and its cheesy white sauce. However, as times have changed and taste buds greatly differ, variations of mac and cheese have been introduced to suit different needs and tastes. Some of the versions are four cheeser macaroni, baked mac, very saucy mac and cheese, macaroni cheese pizza and restaurant style mac and cheese. I’m sure that most American homes have their own version of this dish. As an addition, you can seldom find a house in the States without a box of an instant mac and cheese mix, that’s how common it is.

Mac and Cheese Ingredients

As previously mentioned, this dish had too many variations and each has a unique ingredient or cooking style. However, the main ingredients that you should not forget are your macaroni pasta and cheese that is needed for your cheesy sauce. In choosing your pasta, fresh is always good but the packed ones are not bad too. Choosing your cheese will depend on if you prefer a strong taste or subtle flavour. If you are not satisfied in using a single cheese variant, you can mix it up with other variants such as the Gruyere cheese which is also perfect for mac and cheese. Now that you’ve learned quite a lot about mac and cheese, start now by buying your pasta in your local grocery and your cheese at any  gourmet cheese shop in your town!
